About CBCT 3D Imaging

Cone Beam CT

A Cone Beam Computerized Tomograph ( CBCT) is a specialized type of x-ray that provides more information than conventional dental or facial x-rays. This computerized scan uses advanced technology to generate three-dimensional (3-D) images. A CBCT is a specialized type of x-ray that provides more information than conventional dental or facial x-rays. What are the benefits of a CBCT scan?

1) Provide 3-D images of dental structures, soft tissues, nerve paths and bone which are considerably more detailed than conventional two-dimensional dental x-rays.
2) Allow for more precise diagnosis and treatment planning.
3) Are simple and comfortable to take and can diagnostically image both bone and soft tissue simultaneously.

What are the common uses of a Dental CBCT scan?

Dental CBCT scans are commonly used to:

  • Evaluate the position of teeth, bone structure, jaw joints and the airway.

  • They are a valuable aid in the accurate placement of implants. In our office, we use a program that allows us to do “virtual surgery”, allowing the doctor to visualize the exact position of the exact brand and size of the implant used in the actual surgery. The actual accuracy of our machine is <0.1mm. In rare circumstances, we also use it to create surgical guides to facilitate the surgery.

  • CBCT’s are also used for surgical planning for the removal of impacted wisdom teeth, 3-D orthodontic evaluation and complex root canal diagnosis and treatment. CBCT’s are still new enough that the list of uses is still expanding.

What are the risks of a Dental CBCT scan?
Unlike medical CT’s, CBCT scans are economical in exposure to radiation; the amount of exposure is approximately the same as a three-hour plane flight or a full set of digital xrays, or about two hours outside in Lake Arrowhead, on a summer day..

How does a Dental CBCT scanning procedure work?
The scan is virtually the same as a panoramic xray: During the scan, a motorized arm rotates 360-degrees around your head while capturing multiple images from different angles that are then reconstructed to create a single 3-D image.
